About
Q: How would you introduce yourself to those who are unfamiliar with your work?
A: unfolded, a small graphic design studio from Zurich, Switzerland. Officially six years old/young.
—
Q: Can you define what kind of work you do using two or three sentences?
A: We are doing art, art direction, graphic and design. analog and digital, time-based and timeless. Most importantly, regardless of whether it is print or digital: it is interactive.
—
Q: A little bit of history: where do the members of unfolded all come from? How did it get started and when?
A: Our various backgrounds come from fine art, graphics and design, new media and education. Nadia Gisler and Friedrich-Wilhelm Graf started to work together on some projects years ago. As they became more committed to the development of all the projects, they founded unfolded in winter 2003. In summer 2008 Alina Günter joined unfolded and we’re pushing our boundaries. Besides working with unfolded, Alina illustrates for a variety of clients. Nadia is completely absorbed in teaching since around 1998 and became professor in 2007 at the Zurich University of Arts. Today Nadia is the head of the Bachelor program for fine art and sometimes even Friedrich-Wilhelm (some days even with Alina) is found teaching and doing workshops at the Zurich University of Arts.
—
Q: Beside that are you enjoy working with wonderfully patient freelancers?
Sure, depending on the project. They are trained photographers, media artists, programmers, editors and so on.
Constant Collaborations with Roman Abt, Stefan Burger, Alexandrea Stölze and our studio partners Adrian Sonderegger and Jojakim Cortis.
Archived Collaborations with Julie Joliat, Lukas Zimmermann, Hin-Van Tran, Nicole Bachmann, Samo Stahler, Eric Wahlforss, Guiliano Vece, Claude Brauchli & Michele Dell’ Ambrogio, Adrian Müller, Ariel Huber, Tommy Fjordside and some helping hands from our friendly network (and for all our translation issue we have a wonderful helping hand from Helen Lyu Abt).
—
Q: What are the strong points of your work? What keeps you going?
A: We are perpetually brainstorming and developing from scratch. Every project is a tabula rasa, a blank canvas. Our approach is to develop the optimal embodiment for our clients. Instead of relying on the conventional solutions, unfolded endeavors to find the most nonpareil concept. Perseverance, reflection, in addition to analysis, allow for the realization of each unfolded work.
